WHAT TO BRING AND TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ATTEND ONE OF MY YOGA CLASSES

Bring your own mat, blanket or large beach towel.  Please have an empty stomach - eat no sooner than 1 1/2 hours before class.  Please wear comfortable clothes, no tight belts or anything that will restrain your ability to move.  Please let me know if you have any injuries that will hinder your ability in some postures.  Please leave your competitive spirit behind.  Let go of the need to show off and be prepared to move just to your own limit and no more.

My classes usually begin with floor work, stretching, and breathing, followed by modified Sivananda style Surya Namaskar.  If you have done the Sun Salutes in a gym or other yoga venue, you will find these to be a little different, a little more active, more graceful.

The Surya Namaskar will be followed by 5 kinds of postures (asanas), interspersed in various ways in each class.  The 5 kinds of postures are forward bends, backward bends, inversions, twists, and balancing.  If you click on the link to the Free Yoga Booklet, you can familiarize yourself with the basic postures that I urge you to practice at home.  These basic asanas are easy to practice and remember, and they will enable you to quickly achieve flexibility, bodily awareness, and calmness, and they will open the door to many, many other yoga postures, techniques, and practices.

I demonstrate each pose for you and watch to see that you are successfully achieving that pose, as closely as possible, given your level of flexibility and familiarity.  I have a gentle way of guiding students into better form.  I may lightly touch you where I feel that you could move a little further in one direction or another.  I will do this only with your permission.   Ahimsa, or non-violence, refers to our treatment of each other and of ourselves.

What I request from you is that you set aside part of each day to practice on your own.  I have provided a booklet here to give you guidance.  I will be posting video at a later date.  Thanks for looking!  I hope to see you in class today!
